Cora Turner Pittingale BOIVIN

I was doing some research this weekend. It seems that Cora Turner PITTINGALE, who Napoleon Boivin married, was adopted by Charles Turner. The 1910 census, of VT-Franklin Co.-St. Albans, shows him living there. There was also a Harriett BUSSETT lodging there. Then, there was Cora and Samantha TURNER, "adopted" daughters. So Samantha seems to be Cora's younger sister. It says she and her parents were both born in VT. I couldn't get anything on PITTINGALE, so am wondering if the spelling is off, or just where this last name came from.

I have flushed out some of that work, but the major credit goes to her. Here, then, is the BOIVIN ancestor information: Ancestors of Charles Louis BOIVIN

First Generation
1. Hazel Alice JACKMAN,1 daughter of Charles Henry JACKMAN and Eliza Ruth WILKIE, was born on 26 Jul 1893 in Brighton, Essex Co., VT, died on 26 Jan 1990 in Newport, Orleans Co., VT at age 96, and was buried on 29 Jan 1990 in Coventry, Orleans Co., VT. Another name for Hazel was Alice A.

Second Generation (Parents)
2. Charles Henry JACKMAN,4 son of William Henry JACKMAN and Alice PIERCE, was born on 30 Jul 1867 in Windsor Mills, Quebec, Canada, died on 3 Dec 1929 in Sutton, Caledonia Co., VT at age 62, and was buried on 5 Dec 1929 in Sutton Village Cemetery, Caledonia Co., VT.
General Notes: The 1881 Canadian Census lists Charles living with Edward Moore at that time. Edward was born about 1855, worked as a laborer, was of English descent, and was a Weslyan Methodist. Charles was 13 at the time of this census and was in school. He is also listed as a Weslyan Methodist. The census also states that he was born in Quebec, about 1868 ( he was 13 at the time of census ). Clyde reports his age on the 1900 Census as 32 years. He reports on that Census that his father was born in MA and his mother in Canada. In 1910 Charles was living in Barton, Orleans Co., VT, but, he is also listed on the census as being a boarder at his cousin, Willis Wilkie's residence. In the 1920 Census Charles reports that his father was born in NH. His death certificate also reports that his father was born in NH. Charles immigrated to the United States in 1891, beoming a Naturalized Citizen. His occupation in 1900 was that of railroad fireman. He engineerd on the railroad from Island Pond, VT to Portland ME. In 1920 he was at his daughter Enid's house in Sutton when the census was taken. Both he and Eliza lived in Sutton, so Charles may have just been visiting there. His name is listed as "Henry".
Charles married Eliza Ruth WILKIE5 on 24 Nov 1891 in Barton, Orleans Co., VT.6
Marriage Notes: Charles and Eliza were married by C. S. Hulbert, Minister of the Gospel, at Barton Landing, Vt. Barton Landing was later named Orleans, which is presently (2004) a village within the town of Orleans. Therefore, all vital records for Orleans are still at the Barton Town Clerk's Office.

3. Eliza Ruth WILKIE,7 daughter of George Dunham WILKIE and Mary PHILBRICK, was born on 24 Jan 1872 in Potton, Quebec, Canada, died on 27 Nov 1943 in Sutton, Caledonia Co., VT at age 71, and was buried on 30 Nov 1943 in Sutton Village Cemetery, Caledonia Co., VT. Another name for Eliza was Wilkey.
General Notes: Eliza is listed, in the 1881 Canadian Census, as a Weslyan Methodist. She is also listed as being of English descent. On the 1900 Census, Eliza is referred to as "Lizzie R". This Census also reports that she immigrated to the United States in 1890 (a year earlier than Charles according to the Censu). She could have possibly met Charles in the USA, as they were married AFTER coming to the States. The 1920 Census listes Eliza's name by "Eliza". This Census states that she came to the USA in 1894 and was Naturalized in 1899. This would conflict with the marriage licence found in Barton, Vermont, as they were married in 1891. In 1930 Eliza is living in Sutton, as a widowed head of household. Annie, Eddie, and Frances were living with her. William H. Jackman, born in February 1930, was also living with her. Her death certificate states she died of carunopus of thyroid gland.
Eliza married Charles Henry JACKMAN8 on 24 Nov 1891 in Barton, Orleans Co., VT.9

Third Generation (Grandparents)
4. William Henry JACKMAN10 was born <1814> in Enfield, Garfield Co., NH and died <1876> at age 62.
General Notes: On Charles' marriage certificate, he lists his father's name as Wm. H. Jackson and his mother's as Alice Jackson, but on all other documents where specific reference is made to Charles' parents, it is Jackman. There is a Samuel Jackman who came to Enfield NH, from MA, with his wife, at a very early day, and settled upon George Hill, where his grandson, James G. Jackman, now resides. He and his wife Ruth had three children. He built a log cabin, in which he lived for several years. In clearing his land, like so many others of his time, he burned the timber and saved the ashes, from which he made potash to pay the taxes and buy provisions. He finally built a more commodious dwelling which was known as Elm Cottage. His grandson James opened it every summer for boarders. Of his children, Samuel Jr. married and settled in Enfield and was the father of three sons. Samuel Jr. moved to Claremont, where he died at age seventy. William, the second son of Samuel Sr., married and settled on the homestead. His four children are as follows: William, who resides in Iowa, and has three chidren, James G., who resided on the homestead and married Lorietta A. Child, of Pomfret, VT, and has 5 children, they being the fourth generation to live on the Jackman homestead. This family could well be William's relations, but more research needs to be done before this assumption can be more seriously considered. In 1871 William was living in Bromton, Quebec, Canada with his wife Allice, son Charles and Edward Moore.
William married Alice PIERCE11 on 22 Aug 1865 in Durham, , Quebec, Canada.
Marriage Notes: William and Alice were married in the Congregational Church.
The child from this marriage was:
2 i. Charles Henry JACKMAN
5. Alice PIERCE,12 daughter of Samuel PIERCE and Alice CASWELL, was born in Apr 1824 in Brompton, Richmond, Quebec, Canada, died on 27 Jan 1894 at age 69, and was buried on 30 Jan 1894 in Brompton, Richmond, Quebec, Canada.
General Notes: It is said that Alice married (1) a Mr. Moore. That by this marriage Two sons and a daughter were born. One son, Alan, was of Portland ME and the other, Ed was of Greenley PQ and Windsor Mills. Family lore also has it that Alice had a brother, Gosford. The 1881 Canadian Census states that Goford Pierce was living in the same town as Alice, who was living with Ed Moore and her son Chares in Brompton. When inquiring in that area, it was discovered that Samuel Pierce was the first settler of Greenlay, Quebec. Greenlay later became, in part, Brompton. He married Alice Caswell, born in Littleton, VT. Alice's father was a primary founder of Littleton. This couple had 14 children, including Gosford. Although the 1881 census has Alice's birthday as <1830>, it's believed that she was born earlier, as stated. In 1861, Alice Morre was living with Samuel and Alice Pierce. In 1871 Allice Jackman was living with William Jackman, their son Charles and with Edward Moore. Both census were of Brompton, Quebec, Canada. This dispels the lore of William never being involved with Charles, when in fact they were living as a married couple in 1871. By 1881, when Alice was living with Ed Moore, William may well have died by this time. Mary E. Pierce and E. A. Moore were witnesses to the burial information for Alice. It was also recorded at that time that Alice was from Brompton, Quebec, Canada.
Alice married James Delapp MOORE13 on 9 Jun 1846 in Melbourne, Richmond, Quebec, Canada.
Marriage Notes: James and Alice were married by John Borland, Pastor of the Methodist Church in Melbourne, Sherbrooke Co., Quebec, Canada.
Children from this marriage were:
i. James Allen MOORE was born on 8 Mar 1847 in Windsor, Richmond, Quebec, Canada. Another name for James was Allan James MOORE.
ii. Julia Alice MOORE was born on 26 Sep 1848 in Brompton, Richmond, Quebec, Canada and died on 28 Jan 1919 in South Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at age 70.
iii. Edward MOORE was born on 29 Dec 1854 in Quebec, Canada.
Alice next married William Henry JACKMAN14 on 22 Aug 1865 in Durham, , Quebec, Canada.
6. George Dunham WILKIE,15 son of Alexander WILKIE and Eliza WHITAKER, was born on 16 Mar 1830 in Windsor Mills, Quebec, Canada, was christened on 13 May 1830 in Potton, Quebec, Canada, died <1892> at age 62, and was buried in Island Pond, Essex Co., VT. Another name for George was George WILKEY.
General Notes: Died at age 62. Buried Island Pond, Vermont, USA, 3rd one in new cemetary, according to Hazel Jackman Webster. His sister, Susan Wilkie Gallop, is Charlie Gallop's grandmother. She was married to Albert Gallop. George was reportedly born in March. He was a farmer, Scottish descent according to the 1881 Canadian Census. His religion is listed there as Weslyan Methodist. His daughter's marriage certificate to George Berry states that George was born in Ft. Drum, PQ.
George married Mary PHILBRICK16 on 15 Jul 1856 in Salem, Orleans Co., VT.17
Children from this marriage were:

General Notes: Mary is about 4 years younger than husband George. She may have been born in Charleston, VT although her death certificate states she was born in Brownington, VT. She was the only child, according to Hazel Webster. In the 1881 Canadian Census, Mary is listed as a Weslyan Methodist, of English descent. Mary's death date is given as 1908, yet she is listed as living with Charles and Eliza Jackman in 1910 on the census. Mary died of an obstruction of the bowells due to old age. Dr. Cleasby was the attending doctor. Her daughter Ida's marriage certificate to George Berry states Mary was born in West Derby, VT.
Mary married George Dunham WILKIE19 on 15 Jul 1856 in Salem, Orleans Co., VT.20

Fourth Generation (Great-Grandparents)
10. Samuel PIERCE21 was born on 31 Dec 1783 in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, died on 6 May 1864 in Brompton, Richmond, Quebec, Canada at age 80, and was buried on 9 May 1864 in Brompton, Richmond, Quebec, Canada.
General Notes: Samuel's mother died when he was a small boy and his father married again. He knew little of his relatives as his older brothers were in the war of 1775. When he was fourteen years of age he agreed to work for a man who was driving a herd of cattle to Canada. When they reached Stanstead, Quebec, he decided to start out for himself to make a living. Equipped with an aze over his shoulder, dressed in blue drill cotton suit, straw hat and rough shoes, he travelled through the forest with only a blazed trail to guide him, meeting with Indians and many wild beasts, until he came to sherbrooke, Quebec. From there he travelled to Brompton, Quebec, which was later known as Windsor Mills, and more recently called Greenlay. Here he took up land and decided to make his home. On the bank of the St. Francis river was a large flat, wih hissls back of it. He cut down trees, cleared a small piece of land, and built a log cabin, living on fish and game until other food could be obtained. When he wanted supplies he had to go down the St. Francis in a canoe to Three Rivers or Quebec City. There were only a few houses at Sherbrooke but other settlers came in soon bringing a seed grain, stock, garden seeds and implements. When he was a young man there was no way to travel but by canoe down the river. He was of United Empire Loyalist stock and took the oath of allegiance as a loyal British subject after coming to Canada, and was appointed the first Captain of the Canadian Militia at Brompton, Quebec. He was a Methodist and class leader of the services held in the Pierce school house on the Brompton side of the river, the minister coming from Melbourne. (Taken from the records of Etta Greenlay, a descendant of Samuel Pierce) Samuel appears in the 1861 Canadian census, but in 1871 his wife "Allice" is living with her son Samuel, which indicates that this Samuel had died by 1871.
Samuel married Alice CASWELL22 on 23 Mar 1809.

General Notes: Alice came to Canada in 1807, when there were roads from Stanstead to Brompton. A number of the families came together, coming with ox teams and big sleds loaded with provisions and such things as they could bring to help make a home in a new country. In passing the home of Samuel Pierce she remarked, "That looks the most like home of any place of them since I came". The man said, "It may be an old bachelor lives there". (Taken from the records of Etta Greenlay, a decendant of Samuel Pierce)

Fifth Generation (Great Great-Grandparents)
22. Nathan CASWELL,31 son of Nathan CASWELL and Hannah SHAW, was born in 1740 in Norwich, New London Co., CT and died on 19 Jun 1824 in Compton, Compton, Quebec, Canada at age 84.
General Notes: Nathan was the first settler of Littleton, NH, arriving there in April 1770. After his marriage he lived in Hebron, CT and in Orford from 1765 to 1770. In the Revolution he served in Capt. Young's Co., Bedel's Regt. Feb to June 1776; Capt. Jeremiah Eames' Co. of Scouts, July 1776 to April 1777; Capt. Richardson's Co., Bedel's Regt. 11 mos and 22 days, beginning in April 1778. July 10, 1779, he was chosen captain for the defence of the northern frontier, town clerk, 1778, 1791, treasurer 1791. He moved, 1803, to Canada.
It was not until after the Indian Wars had made central New Hampshire safe for settlement, that many proprietors received grants oftownships which they sold in small lots to their financial advantage. In some remote section of the State, liberal inducements were offeredto persuade families to purchase land for homesteads, farms, andbusiness, since the charters usually demanded that not less than tenhouseholds must be established within a given number of years or thecontract would be forfeited. Few proprietors ever saw their grants. Anexception was Col. Israel Morey who emigrated from Hebron, Conn, toOrford, in 1765. With him came Nathan Caswell, his wife, and theirfour children. In the cold, wet spring of 1770, Col. Morey urged Nathan Caswell tobecome the first settler of a grant called Apthorp, now Littleton, situated between the Connecticut and Ammonoosuc Rivers. Quickly, thefamily packed a few household goods and started on foot for their newhome thirty miles north. At Apthorp, on the 11th of April, Nathan Caswell found the log cabinthat he knew had been built and filled with hay by explorers duringthe previous summer. To his dismay, unmistakable evidences of therecent presence of Indians were present, but darkness prevented hisretreat. Fearing to build a fire or light a candle, his wife andchildren crept under the dry hay for warmth while the frightenedNathan stood at the entrance all evening with his flintlock ready forintruding Indians.
It was during this evening, in the comfort of the bed of hay, that ababy boy was born, appropriately christened Apthorp. Even though hecame into the world under difficult conditions, the baby thrived andlived to the ripe age of eighty. The present, however, was then ofgreatest importance. In order to get his family away from theimpending danger of an Indian attack, Nathan immediately sought forsome means to transport his family to safer quarters. At length, afallen primeval pine was discovered near the banks of a nearby river, somewhat decayed but strong enough to serve as a boat. Hurriedly, hehollowed the tree to size and launched it into the swollen stream. Thefamily embarked upon a perilous voyage down the Ammonoosuc, constantlyin danger of capsizing the clumsy craft or of being overwhelmed byhuge cakes of drifting ice. A kind Providence protected them until they landed a Salmon Hole, sixmiles downstream, where a small fort had been built high on the bankby families who had made a beginning of Gunthwaite, now called Lisbon.A cordial reception awaited them, and the family remained at the fortwhile Nathan returned to Apthorp. Even though he and his family wereabsent but three day, he found the cabin reduced to ashes. A new log home received the family during the summer, which theyoccupied until the Revolution again brought the expectation of Indianraids. Then the Caswells sought protection twenty miles up the riverat the fort at Northumberland, the refuge of many families from thatarea who remained together until the end of hostilities. Meanwhile, Nathan's wife was awarded for her weary journey on footthose thirty miles. According to the usual custom, a section ofApthorp was awarded to her baby, since he was surely the first bornwithin the township. Nathan Caswell sold his claim on the Ammonoosucand selected another on the banks of the Connecticut River where hebuilt a new home in the vicinity of other settlers. This house ismentioned in the history of Littleton as the meeting place on theSabbath of these isolated families. Among the heads of households werecollege graduates, who read sermons and offered prayers for guidanceuntil a meeting house was erected on the hill, with a clergyman in itspulpit. As the children grew to maturity, some of them built homes in the townwhile others sought their homestead further north. Among the later wasyoung Apthorp who finally located in Canada. There in their old ageNathan Caswell and his wife were welcome, but their numerousdescendants are found in the town, that they inhabited at so criticala period in their career. (Ref: Mrs. Daniel Harrington, Littleton, NH.) Capt.Nathan Caswell commanded a company of Rangers inthe militia of New Hampshire, where he lived during the war. He served in CaptainYoung's , Bedel's Regiment, from February to June 1776; in Captain Jeremiah Evan's Company of Scouts from July 1776 to April 1777. Captain Richardson's Company , Bedel's regiment 11 months. At a convention of towns in inCoos (near Upper Cohase Intervales, now Newbury, Vermont) held at Norththumberland, NH. July 10, 1779, " they chose Nathan CaswellCaptain over these three towns for the present." This was for the defense ofthe northern frontier. As the French and Indian War gradually subsided after the fall ofQuebec in 1759,settlers began pushing their way north intounderdeveloped territory. The broad Connecticut River and the anyindian trails that flanked it made a natural corridor into thewilderness that lay north of Fort #4 at Charlestown. At theHaverhill-Bath line the Connecticut is joined by the Ammonoosuc, andsettlements naturally spread in this direction. Up-river from Bath,Lisbon was charted in 1761-first as Concord, later as Gunthwait-and astockade was built here for protection against bands of maraudingIndians, who not unnaturally resented this incursion on territory theyhad roamed for generations. Beyond Gunthwait, the Ammonoosuc runsthrough broad, fetile meadows and this desirable area between thediverging rivers was charted in 1764 under the name of Chiswick.
It was along this rough trail following the rivers that Nathan Caswelland his family packed all their belongs on a single horse and , in thespring of 1770 ,left the settlement of Orford. After travellingthrough Piermont and Haverhill to Bath, they followed the Ammonoosucand eventually reached Gunthwait. Caswell and his eldest son had beenover the trail the previous year and knew of the existence of a smallhut on the meadow near the riverbank. Arriving at this goal, thefamily found to their dismay evidence of recent Indian visits andspent what can only be imaged as an anxious night. The boys slept outin the long meadow grass;Mrs. Caswell retired to the hut and proceededto increase Littleton's population by one-her fifth son.In themorning, they decided to retreat to the safety of the Gunthwaitstockade,so Nathan and his sons hewed out a rough dugout canoe inwhich the family floated downriver while the oldest boy, a manly eightyears old ,rode or lead the horse back the way they had come. After afew days this indominable family returned to their "home" to find thecabin burned and what few goods they had left stolen. It is crediblethat they set to work on a new cabin, cleared and planted a smallgarden, and became the first family in Littleton. (Ref:Images of America-Littleton,New Hampshire published 1995ISBN 0-7524-0222-6) This is from Jackson's "History of Littleton, NH" page 173. The first of these pioneers, Captain Nathan Caswell, was born inNorwich, CT. in 1740. He was apprenticed to a tailor, and served, asthe law then required, a full term of seven years. In 1761 he marriedHannah Bingham, a decendant in the fourth generation from DeaconThomas Bingham, who was the common ancestor of the Bingham's in NewEngland. For two or three years he worked at his trade in his nativetown, and then established himself at Hebron, where he made theacquaintance of Israel Morey. When that gentleman came to Orford in1765, Mr. Caswell with his family accompanied him to that town, ofwhich they were amoung the first settlers. General Morey wasinterested with the Littles, Daltons, and others in this township, andupon him fell the work of supervising its settlement; and to this endhe induced Caswell to make his home on the Ammonoosuc meadows in thespring of 1770. The family then consisted of Mr. Caswell, his wife andfour sons, Nathan Jr., Osias, Ezra, and Andrew.
The eldest two were born in Connecticut, the others in Oxford.Anthrop, the third son, was born on the night of the arrival in thistown. There was something in this man which peculiarly fitted him forthe life of a pioneer. Some strain in the blood, a temperatement thatfound restraint irksome, a love of nature and an untutored life amidstits solitudes seem to have kept him on the verge of civilizationthrough out his long and blameless life. He was hardy, bold, andenterprising within the sphere of his chosen activities. His educationwas better than most men of his time and in his rank in life. From the Revolutionary War Pension File: Nathan Caswell, NH line, applied 26 Feb 1833 Orleans Dist VT aged 70, of Brompton, Province of Lower Canada, enlisted Stratford NH. Webster and Boivin Family

I decided to create a new blog just for my family genealogy information. My father's family is WEBSTER and my mother's is BOIVIN. English and French. Go figure. So doing the genealogy is interesting. A half dozen years ago I wrote a book on the WEBSTER side. Took a LOT of work - actually years worth. But was able to do a lot of interviews, visit a LOT of town clerk offices, ect. I will be adding a bit of the book often until all is done. However, I have about 17 thousand names researched between the two families. So I will be sharing stuff continually. Have fun learning about the family!!!
