General Notes: DEATH: William died on his way home from the Civil War. He was wounded June 1864 at Cold Harbor. On May 31, Sheridan's cavalry seized the vital crossroads of Old Cold Harbor. Early on June 1, relying heavily on their new repeating carbines and shallow entrenchments, Sheridan's troopers threw back an attack by Confederate infantry. Confederate reinforcements arrived from Richmond and from the Totopotomoy Creek lines. Late on June 1, the Union VI and XVIII Corps reached Cold Harbor and assaulted the Confederate works with some success. By June 2, both armies were on the field, forming on a seven-mile front that extended from Bethesda Church to the Chickahominy River. At dawn June 3, the II and XVIII Corps, followed later by the IX Corps, assaulted along the Bethesda Church-Cold Harbor line and were slaughtered at all points. Grant commented in his memoirs that this was the only attack he wished he had never ordered. The armies confronted each other on these lines until the night of June 12, when Grant again advanced by his left flank, marching to James River. On June 14, the II Corps was ferried across the river at Wilcox's Landing by transports. On June 15, the rest of the army began crossing on a 2,200-foot long pontoon bridge at Weyanoke. Abandoning the well-defended approaches to Richmond, Grant sought to shift his army quickly south of the river to threaten Petersburg. Result(s): Confederate victory. Location: Hanover County. Campaign: Grant's Overland Campaign (May-June 1864). Date(s): May 31-June 12, 1864. Principal Commanders: Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Maj. Gen. George G. Meade [US]; Gen. Robert E. Lee [CS]. Malcolm was an organist in the Seacoast area for over 50 years - in Greenland and at the United Methodist church in Portsmouth. For 35 years, he was music director, organist, and choir director at North Congregational Church. He frequently played piano for family and friends on the baby grand in his home, and his love of classical music brought enjoyment to many. Malcolm always felt that helping others was good for all, and since his retirement at the shipyard, he volunteered for a number of causes, including Meals on Wheels, AARP, NARFE, the Community Council of Senior Citizens and RSVP. He was a volunteer for the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce for many years, and was the founder and president of the Strawbery Banke Croquet Club. He also founded and directed the summer "Music in Market Square" series with weekly concerts at North Church, and was the concert arrangements manager for the Community Concerts Association for many years, which brought many talented classical artists to the Seacoast. A plaque he had in his home stated his love of music clearly: Music is a fair and glorious gift of God. After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. Where there is love there is music. His talent and love of music allowed him to sing with the Barnstormers men's chorus for many years, and even though he was a kind, loving and warm man, he wasn't above whipping those who challenged him on the croquet court. He sold the family home of 52 years on Lafayette Road in 2004 and moved to Miami to enjoy the warm weather and be nearer to his son David.
